Pure Magic is something that can’t be explained-it gives me butterflies, hope, and longing. The magic is performed when we co-ferment Bordeaux-style varietals. Great wines turn into wines that surpass mere greatness and enter a Twilight Zone. Pure exhilarating time-warp stuff.
2024 Pure Magic
The 2024 Pure Magic shows more of the floral elements of the Cabernet Franc, along with some additional mid-palate weight and texture. On the palate, this wine is a mix of red and black fruits, showing red raspberry, currant, and black cherry, with loads of violets, lavender, and thistle. This vintage expresses itself with more elevated fresh acidity, which lends itself towards a longer finish on the palate. READ MORE
2024 shoots pushed in early spring with vigor due to excellent groundwater and warm conditions, forming healthy canopies. Before veraison, in June and into July, Napa experienced two short heat spikes which accelerated ripening. It was an early start for the vineyards, and an early harvest for the winemakers, a bit fast and furious toward the end, but overall one we all fondly look back on as special. The wines have great color, extract, layers of flavor, excellent #s (PH/TA/dry extract/etc..). 2024 is reminiscent of some of the great vintages of the past like 1987 and 1991, that have aged extremely well.
In 2001, the TOR house was built and stood on the foundation of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from very special blocks in vineyards we consider among Napa Valley’s finest. Great wines sometimes require risk and a leap of faith. Both paths led us to our first Pure Magic wines, based on co-fermenting Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot with Cabernet Sauvignon from a single vineyard. The decision is made only when the grapes are picked, not before or after, and it’s based on a winemaker’s instinct honed through decades of experience. It is a gamble because the decision cannot be reversed; the genie cannot return to the lamp. In the best years, our genie grants our wish with a wine whose sum exceeds its parts. In these years, we call this wine Pure Magic.
