Founded in 1979 by Larry Hyde, this Carneros vineyard is revered worldwide and often called the crown jewel of California Chardonnay. TOR’s long-awaited rows here yield some of our most distinctive white wines.
Larry Hyde is rightly known as the “wise man of Carneros.” For more than four decades, his relentless pursuit of the best plant material and meticulous farming has built Hyde’s reputation as one of the top vineyards in the world. TOR waited fourteen years for access to our first rows here, planted to Larry’s prized “Small Cluster Clone” of Wente Chardonnay, yielding minuscule crops of extraordinary quality.
Since then, we’ve added parcels of Calera and old shot-cluster Wente in the coldest, windswept blocks of the vineyard. These three selections together form the backbone of TOR’s Hyde bottlings, wines of layered complexity and precision, often culminating in the Hyde Selection (HS) cuvée—a Chardonnay maker’s dream realized.
